Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can be amazingly effective in treating a variety of childhood ailments. At Red Earth Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, we treat children of all ages. In Chinese Medicine, children are thought to be immature both physically and functionally and most common pediatric complaints due to this immaturity. Children can become sick very quickly, particularly with illnesses related to the lungs and digestive system. Children are also thought to have very sensitive and pure energy. For this reason, children and infants can respond to acupuncture and related techniques very quickly as well.
We assess each child's readiness for acupuncture on a case-by-case basis. For children, we typically use an non-invasive technique developed specifically for infants and children called shoni shin. Special acupuncture tools are used to gently move the qi or energy, but no needles are inserted into the skin. This technique can treat a wide variety of conditions including:
- bedwetting, and
As children become older (over age 8) the use of needles for acupuncture can be considered but only if the child is ready. We will always adapt our approach to the specific nature of the child and will never force a child to have a treatment. Sometimes it may take several visits for the child to become comfortable enough to try it. We can continue to use shoni shin, our Truly Painless Acupuncture or acupressure until they are ready. We may also use herbs, cupping or moxa as part of the treatment. We will do our best to reassure them about the treatment, answer any questions they may have and make sure they feel very safe.
With teenagers, we know they have their own opinions which may differ from their parents. We will take the time to discuss any fears or concerns and will provide background information on acupuncture so they feel informed and empowered about their own health.
