Treatment for Kids

We assess each child's readiness for acupuncture on a case-by-case basis. For children, we typically use an non-invasive technique developed specifically for infants and children called shoni shin. Special acupuncture tools are used to gently move the qi or energy, but no needles are inserted into the skin. This technique can treat a wide variety of conditions including:

  • colic
  • indigestion
  • GERD
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • allergies
  • asthma
  • eczema
  • hives
  • bedwetting
  • stuttering

As children become older (over age 8)  the use of needles for acupuncture can be considered but only if the child is ready.  We will always adapt our approach to the specific nature of the child and will never force a child to have a treatment.

Sometimes it may take several visits for the child to become comfortable enough to try it. We can continue to use shoni shin, our Truly Painless Acupuncture or acupressure until they are ready. We may also use herbs, cupping or moxa as part of the treatment. We will do our best to reassure them about the treatment, answer any questions they may have and make sure they feel very safe.

With teenagers, we know they have their own opinions which may differ from their parents. We will take the time to discuss any fears or concerns and will provide background information on acupuncture so they feel informed and empowered about their own health.
